Urban nesting, self made nests within the city

How we live within urban environments is of interest to me, not only as a person but also as a designer. This thesis is an investigation into how different modes of living affect our day-to-day well-being.
In today’s society, the average person has to make do with a small living space at a high price, in a densly populated area.This leaves little opportunity for taking a moment to be ‘alone’ in a comfortable and enjoyable environment.
In the lack of having such a physical place of retreat, we often escape to our ‘online nests’ and use this virtual place of residence to represent our identities to a larger degree than our traditional homes do.
When the hustle and bustle of the city gets too intense and we have a natural reaction to take a ‘time out’, where does one go when our place of familiarity is half virtual and half ‘real’? Is it possible to physically create an independent space for yousrelf within a city – a place which offers a moment for contemplation?
I have created a proposal for ‘urban nests’ that responds to the perhaps, unrecognised, wishes, needs and longings of city dwellers. Bridging the gap between our virtual and physical homes, I am providing people with their own personal place of retreat without having to leave the city – a moment of peace amidst the noise.

Saints of Silence

The student fraternity Circumflex, located on Capucijnenstraat, Maastricht, was not intially welcome in the neighbourhood four year ago. The neighbours feared excessive night time noise and opposed the fraternity renting the old cloister. Through an ongoing dialogue, an agreement was reached that the students would have to ensure that the street was kept quiet at night. It was a pact of silence.

Instead of opposing this rule, the fraternity adopted the restriction as an addition to their many pre-existing rituals. A student bouncer sits on a bar stool on the pavement every night ensuring that the members walk down the street in silence. The students are not allowed to stand still, talk, drink or smoke on Capucijnenstraat and have to instead make the walk in silence to the main street.

By being present on the street every night, the fraternity bouncers offer an additional security to the neighborhood of Capucijnenstraat. We wished to honor the students´ contributions while at the same time making a visual statement that although the individual students´ time in Maastricht is temporary, the presence of students in the city is permanent. They are as much a part of the community as the children attending the school next door and the rest of the residents on the street. We wished to show how a social group has been willing to meet the community half way by instructing their 700 members to be silent.

Therefore, we have called them the “Saints of Silence”, designed a permanent baldechin structure to mark their place in the neighborhood, and re-designed their jackets to communicate security and care for the other residents. Combined these simple changes have made the community more aware of the contributing qualities that this fraternity has on the community and offered a greater sense of belonging to the students of Circumflex.

Wildplassen is makkelijk, snel en soms erg praktisch. Maar het heeft soms nare consequenties: je kunt er een boete voor krijgen, gebouwen mee beschadigen en er blijft een nare geur achter. Ik wil meer bewustwording creëren rondom publiekelijk urineren en bedacht een concept waarbij een coating, die reageert (verkleurd) wanneer hij in aanraking komt met urine, op een muur wordt aangebracht.

Zo kan iemand letterlijk zijn naam achterlaten, of je maakt mensen bewust door een tekst of afbeelding te laten verschijnen.

Kanaaldijk Zuid, Nr. 7

In Eindhoven staan ontzettend veel gebouwen leeg. Langzamerhand moet oude industrie plaatsmaken voor woonruimte.
Ik vind het jammer dat mensen niet meer weten wat er zich in hun wijk of omgeving heeft afgespeeld en waarom de straten en huizen waar ze wonen zijn zoals ze zijn. Onderhevig aan erosie wordt door de tijd heen stukje bij beetje de ware aard van het gebouw of de omgeving getoond.
Zo kan men zien wat een plek door de jaren heen heeft meegemaakt.
Ik wil mensen bewust maken van hun omgeving en de vergankelijkheid ervan.. Op een speelse manier wil ik ze de mogelijkheid geven om hun omgeving en zijn geschiedenis opnieuw te leren kennen.

Ik heb een 3-dimensionaal boek gemaakt dat je kan lezen door het te “pellen”. Letterlijk sla je een pagina om en ga je terug in de tijd.

Kijk om je heen

Mensen maken te veel gebruik van hun auto of openbaar vervoer en vergeten daardoor wat het is om “buiten te zijn”..
Bij dit project heb ik naar aanleiding van dit thema een aantal typo/grafische composities gemaakt met als doel opnieuw interesse te wekken om naar buiten te gaan. De duiven komen deze als het ware naar je brengen.

Als Eindhovenaar kom je graag voor je stad uit. Op Stratumseind is dat geen probleem maar op je kantoorbaan is het een ander verhaal. Met dit hemd kan je toch op een subtiele manier een van je favoriete stukjes Eindhoven laten zien.
De print is namelijk zo gerasterd dat van dichtbij een patroon van puntjes is te zien. Alleen van een afstand het je favoriete plek zichtbaar. De afbeelding is ook alleen goed te zien als je je colbert open draagt.

Eindhoven, nu pas mijn thuis, nu pas mijn plek. Ik voel me hier fijn. Het duurde even..
Dit is een serie afbeeldingen die gaan over mijn haat/liefde verhouding met de stad Eindhoven.
De afbeeldingen zijn detail opnames die allemaal te maken hebben met cliches over de stad.
Uiteindelijk heb ik van het geheel een magazine gemaakt.

Elke plek in Eindhoven heeft zijn eigen vorm, textuur en kleur. Bij een aantal bekende plekken in de binnenstad heb ik camouflage patronen ontworpen waarmee bepaalde (storende) elementen gecamoufleerd kunnen worden.
